On Sunday, April 27, Ashton College participated in the 2014 Vancouver Sun Run. Our 9 person team crossed the finish line with times ranging from 1 hour 57 to 48 minutes 14 seconds.
This was the 30th Annual Sun Run which originally began to promote health and well-being.
“Doing the Sun Run, or in my case, the Sun Walk, was a big step towards a healthier me,” says Shane Puff, Ashton College’s Online Program Administrator. “Seeing all the smiling people and walking with my colleagues made for a really great Sunday morning. I can hardly wait for next year’s run.” Shane finished with a time of 1 hour 57 minutes.
The Vancouver Sun Run is Canada’s largest 10km race. Over 40, 000 people participated in the Run, despite the inclement weather. In addition, runners raised over $150 000 for various charities including $80 000 for the Henry Jerome Classic (international track meet) and $50 000 to go towards the Vancouver Sun Raise-a-Reader foundation.
For many Ashton College Sun Run team members, this was their first time participating in the race. This was not only Rachael Zapp’s first Sun Run, but also her first 10 km race, “[This] was also my very first 10 km race! Lucky for us, it was a beautiful day too! Overall, I had a great time. I will definitely consider doing it again in the future! Who knows, maybe next year I can try to get under one hour.” Rachael, who is Ashton College’s Events and Program Coordinator, finished with a time of 1 hour 4 minutes.
Four of the Ashton College team members decided to walk the 10 km track in what they called the Vancouver Sun Stroll, “There were 4 of us walking in the Ashton Group and after 1:57, we all decided to link arms and skip as we crossed the finish line together,” says Rica Zara, Ashton College’s Marketing Production Specialist.
Our fastest team member was Katie Mills who crossed the finish line in an impressive 48 minutes and 14 seconds! “I’ve run in a lot of races before, but none as large as yesterday’s event. It was like going on a run with the whole of Vancouver!”
