Ashton College Becomes Designated Learning Institution

Published On: June 3, 2014

On June 1, 2014 The Canadian Government introduced new rules designed to reduce the potential for fraud or misuse of the International Student Program while protecting Canada’s international reputation for high-quality education and improving services to genuine students.

Prior to these changes, there were no common standards with which to measure International Programs across Canada. In addition, there was no requirement for students to be registered at an institution to attend classes after their arrival in Canada. This meant that students who applied for a study permits, but did not attend classes could not be reported under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA).

To ensure that foreign nationals who enter Canada for educational purposes are genuine students, Citizen and Immigration Canada (CIC) developed new rules including limiting the issuance of study permits to applicants who will be studying at a Designated Learning Institution, including institutions that are designated by provinces and territories on the basis of meeting minimum standards.

In addition, these new rules will also require students to be actively pursuing their studies while in Canada, and also allowing full-time international students enrolled at designated institutions in certain programs to work part time off campus and full time during scheduled school breaks without a work permit.

Ashton College is proud to announce that we have successfully met all of the requirements and are officially a Designated Learning Institution. We are excited to enter this new era of Canadian education which shows our commitment, as a nation, to providing quality educational programming both for international students and domestic students.
