Published On: July 28, 2020It happens to all of us. We all go through spells in our job where we feel bogged down in the specifics of our work. Gradually we’re so focused on those day-to-day details and the to do list, we forget why we chose the job in the first place. There’s no fun in that! Especially during COVID 19, it’s time to bring the fun back to our jobs and in this case, we’re going to help bookeepers return to that joy and excitement they felt when they first took a bookkeeping course. These tips can help whether it’s just a bad day, a sense of overwhelm or the knowledge that you need a vacation (but hoping on an international flight isn’t on the horizon for most of us right now).
Learn something new
Gaining new knowledge and new skills often brings a great deal of enjoyment when they can be applied in your day-to-day life. Perhaps you haven’t yet taken a formal bookkeeping course. If not, now is a great time to turn to an education partner like Ashton College. Not only can Ashton offer an online bookkeeping course, the school also delivers a Quick books course through its new Continuing Education division.
Perhaps there’s something you’ve always been interested in but weren’t sure if it was the right time – like a bookkeeping course in taxes or an online bookkeeping course about payroll programs and available tools. Not only can an online bookkeeping course give you more information and skills, it can shake things up to bring new awareness to your business, additional benefits to your clients and may even take your business into an exciting new direction.
Set up brainstorming meetings with favorite clients
Your clients hire you as a bookkeeper because they don’t have the time or skills to manage the accounting tasks you take care of for them. What they may not be aware of is the realm of additional services you can bring to the table. Are you experienced in collections? Perhaps you can be more involved in the accounts receivable aspect. If you have helped grow other businesses by looking at their financials and making suggestions, you might be able to offer opportunities for growth and cost savings.
Consider the ways you can help your clients grow and improve, then ask for a brainstorming meeting to come up with new ways to help.
Create your own business board of directors
When you talk about what you do, do others get interested because they don’t have a clue what that would be like? Are they curious about what goes on behind the scenes? Do you enjoy telling them about it? You need to establish your own business’s board of directors! This isn’t a formalized board of course. Think of it as your very own sounding board. Consider friends and acquaintances who are familiar with business, maybe have (or have had) their own businesses and don’t mind spending an hour or two a month with you and a few others.
Make sure you like and trust these people and pick three or four from those you would consider. Take your challenges to the meeting, reward your new board with a good meal and small gifts from time to time and rely on them to help.
Get to know your favorite part of the job
To love your job, you need to know the parts of it that really excite you. When you make your list of to-dos, don’t start with the exciting tasks first. Do one thing you’ve been putting off, then do something you enjoy most as a reward for getting through the other less-pleasant task. Using this reward method, you’ll breeze through the day always looking forward to the next reward.
It’s easy to get into a bit of a job rut, even when we love what we do. There are a number of ways to break out of it and love your job more than ever. As a bookkeeper, take your time to find out the best options for you to fall in love with your business again.
