The BC Fire Code is a provincial regulation that governs fire safety measures in a building, and the BC Plumbing is a provincial regulation that governs plumbing standards in buildings.
Each of the codes affects the industry at different times and in different ways. The BC Building Code mainly applies during the construction and renovation of a building. Similarly, the BC Plumbing Code largely applies during the construction of a building, as it lays out the requirements for the design and installation of new plumbing systems. The BC Fire Code is mainly applied when a completed building is occupied. It is imperative for completed buildings to meet the standards laid out in the BC Fire Code in order to ensure the safety of those occupying the building during an emergency. Buildings in BC must meet the requirements of all three of these codes.
