How the BC Building Code Affects Your Career

Published On: February 19, 2021

If you are involved in any part of the construction industry in British Columbia then your work is influenced in some way by the BC building code. Whether you are a home inspector, builder, construction manager, tradesperson, real estate investor, property owner, or property manager, you should be aware of the BC Building Code and what it entails.

We are going to break down what the BC Building Code is, how it affects your career, and how learning the code can help you get ahead.

What is the BC Building Code?

The BC Building Code is a provincial regulation that governs how new construction, building alterations, repairs and demolitions are completed. This code establishes minimum requirements for safety, health, accessibility, fire and structural protection of buildings and energy and water efficiency. It applies throughout the province except for some federal lands and the City of Vancouver.

The BC Building Code is regularly updated and altered to ensure it meets the latest safety standards. The current version of the code is BC Building Code 2018.

The building code is not the only code that affects the construction industry in BC. The BC Fire Code and BC Plumbing Code must also be taken into consideration when constructing a building in BC. The BC Fire Code is a provincial regulation that governs fire safety measures in a building, and the BC Plumbing is a provincial regulation that governs plumbing standards in buildings.

How Do BC Codes Affect You?

Each of the codes affects the industry at different times and in different ways. The BC Building Code mainly applies during the construction and renovation of a building. If your career has you involved in any step of construction, including the planning and design stages as well as the actual construction, then your work needs to be in line with the BC Building Code. Similarly, the BC Plumbing Code largely applies during the construction of a building, as it lays out the requirements for the design and installation of new plumbing systems. The BC Fire Code is mainly applied when a completed building is occupied. It is imperative for completed buildings to meet the standards laid out in the BC Fire Code in order to ensure the safety of those occupying the building during an emergency. Buildings in BC must meet the requirements of all three of these codes.

These codes are critical to the construction industry and if any construction project is found to not meet the requirements set out in these codes, it can be a massive setback for the people involved. It is for this reason that many of the senior positions in the construction industry require you to have a working knowledge of the BC Building Code. If you are capable of ensuring that a building project is in line with BC Building Codes at every step of the project, then you will be able to access some of the best job opportunities in your industry.
