Vikas Sharma is a recent graduate of Ashton’s Immigration Consultant Diploma (IMCD) Program.

Born and raised in India, Vikas immigrated to Canada in 2010 and is now proud to be a Canadian citizen. “There are so many different educational and professional opportunities available in Canada; no matter what you are interested in, there is something out there that is right for you.”

When Vikas arrived in Canada, he had a Bachelor of Medicine and a desire to continue working as a healthcare professional. “I completed a nursing diploma program in 2011 and began practicing as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).”

“After over three years in my position, I began feeling like I was ready for a change, but I wanted to continue working in an industry where I could help people.”

As an immigrant himself, Vikas was familiar with the difficulties faced by those in search of Canadian citizenship. “The process of immigrating is obviously very lengthy and there is a great deal of uncertainty and stress involved. I saw that there was a need for trained professionals who could assist people seeking a better life in Canada.”

Vikas’ uncle, a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) with over ten years of experience was the one who eventually encouraged Vikas to enrol in the IMCD program. “He works in the industry and had heard good things about the program, so when I decided I was ready to return to school, he urged me to attend Ashton.”

Vikas enrolled in the IMCD program in February of 2015, and chose to attend classes on a part-time basis while continuing to work as an LPN. “Classes were held in the evening, which allowed me to continue working on a full-time basis. Although the part-time option took longer to complete, it was definitely the best choice for me.”

When reflecting on his time in the program, Vikas is quick to mention how much he enjoyed his instructors, particularly Nevena Djuricic. “All the instructors were wonderful, but Nevena was just perfect. I loved her teaching style and the way she used real-world examples to illustrate concepts; she focused on emphasizing the reasons behind different pieces of legislation, rather than just memorization. Throughout the program she was always willing to provide additional help, she stayed after class to answer questions, and helped us with every problem.”

Since graduating in July, Vikas has continued to work as an LPN while preparing for the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council Full Skills Exam.

“I hope to become an RCIC and join my uncle’s firm, and eventually transition to working full-time as an immigration consultant. Although I am switching industries, I still plan to help as many people as possible.”
