Ashton Runs for the Cure

Published On: October 7, 2013

October is national Breast Cancer Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness for breast cancer, which affects over three million women world wide. One of the events scheduled for the campaign is the CIBC Run for the Cure. Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest single day volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds and awareness for breast cancer. The event takes place in Vancouver and across the country on Sunday, October 6.

Last year over $30 million dollars was raised across the country

The money raised allows the foundation to continue funding ground breaking research, education, awareness, and advocacy initiatives.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1986 by a group of women who saw that too many of their sisters, daughters, and mothers were being diagnosed with a disease that they were embarrassed to talk about. The goal of the foundation was to bring a voice as well as a face to the illness and to help provide funding and research to breast cancer specific initiatives. Nearly thirty years later, the foundation has stayed true to its original vision. The foundation works with tens of thousands event participants and volunteers each year to carry out its mission.

Ashton College fielded a team of 14 for this year’s Run for the Cure, with youngest runner Nicholas, our Director of Student Administration's son, clocking in at 7 years old. A great crowd showed up to watch the event and cheer runners (and walkers) around the 5 km route which took us past Science World, through Mount Pleasant and back over the Cambie Bridge.

Our team raised $328.00 for Breast Cancer Research – a huge achievement! Thank you to everyone who participated in the race, and our students, staff and faculty for their generous donations.
