We love catching up with our graduates to hear about their experiences and successes! We recently had the pleasure of connecting with Nkiru Denky, who graduated from our Education Assitant Diploma Program. Read on to hear about her insights, career transition, and memorable learning experiences.
I graduated from Enugu State University of Science and Technology years back with a bachelor's in Soil Science. I practiced for a few years as an agriculture teacher and moved into the customer service sector where l assisted organizations to receive, care and maintain their customers but my love to impact the younger generation grew and l decided to take a course as an educational assistant.
I know that a bachelor's degree in Agriculture may feel like a very far field from an educational assistant, but one thing I've discovered while working as a teacher is the importance of impacting lives. I have been assisting children and youths in behaviour and natural skills for many years. Those were skills that got really sharp through my undergrad experience. Then, of course, once I was in the workforce and realized communication and teaching was my passion, I attended diploma school in EA at Ashton college to strengthen my youth empowerment skills.
Did you have any favourite instructors or memorable learning experiences from the program?
I love all the instructors and the amount of work they put into helping us get through this program and graduate successfully.
What were some things that challenged you about the EAD program?
One of the challenges l encountered was during my EAD 100 Philosophy course. The assignment topic was: What if Feud was on Facebook… I worked so hard on that assessment and had sleepless nights yet ended up with about 30 points over 100 EAD. I was highly disappointed but happy that I and other few students were allowed to retake it towards the end of the program.
Was there anything that surprised you about the learning experience?
No.
How has your career progressed since your time with Ashton College?
I have the opportunity to work with different children/youths across diverse backgrounds in my community and online.
Did taking the program help to improve your confidence in the workforce?
Yes, this program boasted my CV and educational experiences.
What inspired you to get into this line of work?
My love to help children/youths with their life ambitions and to assist their learning process in and out of the classroom.
What are your future plans?
Yes, l have gained a considerable amount of exposure and experience since working in this field but I'm taking my expertise beyond the classroom to reach youths across the globe. Therefore l created a network on how the youths can expose and serve their natural gifts to live out the reason why they were born.
What advice would you offer to someone who is considering studying at Ashton College?
Ashton has your interest in mind so they will consider you first in decision making. Even when it's not possible they'll create a new path to ensure you finish your program well and as scheduled.
Is there anything more you would like to share?
Though my EAD online program was intense and difficult, at some point l wanted to quit but I'm happy l didn't. I enjoyed my moments as a student at Ashton college and will recommend this reputable school to anyone considering taking a course there.
