Certificate in Family Class Immigration Law Overview
The family class immigration program is meant to reunite Canadian citizens and permanent residents with their close family members. If you agree to support a sponsored member of the family class, you are promising to provide for their basic needs for a set amount of time, so they do not have to rely on social assistance.
This course will look at all the family class applications for permanent residence that are submitted at the same time as the sponsorship application to a Case Processing Centre in Canada. CPCs are responsible for processing family class sponsorship applications. This course will also explore why some family class eligibility determinations may be made at other Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada offices where required.

Topics/Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Explain the relevant sections of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations pertaining to Family Class.
- Identify the categories under the Family Class.
- Outline who can be sponsored in the Family Class.
- Explain who is eligible to sponsor a member of the Family Class.
- Discuss the difference between a legal and a genuine relationship, and what is meant by ‘bad faith’.
- Explain the requirement to process adopted children.
- Differentiate between an Outside of Canada and an In-Canada permanent resident application.
- Explain the process of Family Class dependents abroad.
- Complete application forms relating to Family Class sponsorships and applications.
- Discuss the most relevant case law related to the Family Class.
Admission Requirements
Although there are no formal admission requirements for this course, due to the advanced nature of the material covered, it is presumed that attendees have a basic knowledge of Canadian Immigration Law in general and this topic in particular.
Credential
Upon completion of the course requirements, a Certificate of Completion will be issued.
Live Online Students
Ashton College uses web conferencing tools for conducting online classes and online learning management systems for managing resources, assignments, and grades. These tools help instructors and students connect live online as well as asynchronously. The basic requirements for online learning include a computer, webcam, speakers, and a microphone or a headset and headphones, along with a reliable internet connection. Though online learning can be pursued using smartphones and tablets, the use of laptops or desktop computers is encouraged for an enhanced learning experience.
