Certificate in International Student Immigration Overview

In this course students will become familiar with the international student immigration process. Students will explore study permits and the necessary criteria for obtaining and applying for a study permit. This course will look at the details surrounding working in Canada while on a study permit, having an accompanying spouse join a student in Canada, as well as the regulations surrounding minors and caring for a minor as a student. Students will also become familiar with the application process and all of the required forms for application.

Topics/Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Explain what a study permit is
  • Identify the criteria and requirements for a study permit
  • Explain the reasons for study permit extensions
  • Explain the processes of studying in Canada as a minor, if you are not a citizen or permanent resident
  • Identify the requirements of a student caring for a minor while studying in Canada
  • Outline the steps in applying for a study permit
  • Outline the steps in applying for a study permit extension
  • Explain the conditions of a study permit
  • Identify the regulations surrounding foreign students working in Canada
  • Explain open work permits
  • Explain post-graduate work permits
  • Identify the requirements of obtaining a work permit as the spouse or common-law partner of a student
  • Explain the International Experience Canada program
  • Outline the study permit process as well as all the necessary application forms and required documentation
  • Identify the impact of place of application on refusal rate (I.e. geographic region, visa exempt versus visa required)

Admission Requirements

Although there are no formal admission requirements for this course, due to the advanced nature of the material covered, it is presumed that attendees have a basic knowledge of Canadian Immigration Law in general and this topic in particular.

Credential

Upon completion of the course requirements, a Certificate of Completion will be issued.

Live Online Students

Ashton College uses web conferencing tools for conducting online classes and online learning management systems for managing resources, assignments, and grades. These tools help instructors and students connect live online as well as asynchronously. The basic requirements for online learning include a computer, webcam, speakers, and a microphone or a headset and headphones, along with a reliable internet connection. Though online learning can be pursued using smartphones and tablets, the use of laptops or desktop computers is encouraged for an enhanced learning experience.
