Certificate in the Labour Market Impact Assessment Process Overview

This is a Certificate course outlining the fundamentals of the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process. This course will deal with the different types of LMIAs by occupation; where and how the applications are submitted and how they are assessed; set out the employer’s compliance and audit obligations; and the types of enforcement actions that can be taken by the federal authorities. The course will focus on the practical applications of the LMIA processes.

Topics/Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated an understanding of:

  • Introduction to LMIA
  • A detailed analysis of the factors used by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) in making decisions on LMIA request
  • The guiding principles and legal considerations behind making decisions on LMIA requests
  • Compliance obligations of employers who utilize the LMIA process
  • The applicability of policies and guidelines of ESDC
  • Employer remedies during the LMIA process

Admission Requirements

Although there are no formal admission requirements for this course, due to the advanced nature of the material covered, it is presumed that attendees have a basic knowledge of Canadian Immigration Law in general and this topic in particular.

Credential

Upon completion of the course requirements, a Certificate of Completion will be issued.

Live Online Students

Ashton College uses web conferencing tools for conducting online classes and online learning management systems for managing resources, assignments, and grades. These tools help instructors and students connect live online as well as asynchronously. The basic requirements for online learning include a computer, webcam, speakers, and a microphone or a headset and headphones, along with a reliable internet connection.
