Using Immigration Portals Course Overview

This course covers the different online portals available for various immigration applications. Further demonstrating the usage of the portals, how they connect to each other, and the different applications and technical issues. After completion of this course, immigration practitioners can confidently advise their clients on utilizing the most suitable portal for their needs.

Topics/Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Identify the different portals used in immigration practice
    • Overview of which portals are available and who can use them
    • How portals interconnect with each other
    • Troubleshooting technical issues
  • Understand and use temporary residence portals
    • What applications are available online for the different types of temporary residence applications
    • How they connect to other portals
    • Troubleshooting technical issues
  • Understand and use permanent residence portals
    • What applications are available online for the different types of permanent residence applications
    • How they connect to other portals
    • Tracking status for applications
    • Troubleshooting technical issues
  • Understand and use employer portals
    • LMIA versus LMIA exemption employer portals in employer-specific work permits
  • Understand and use provincial nomination portals
    • Different types of PNP applications (Express Entry versus “paper”)
    • Other portals associated with the applications (paying fees, linking applications, trackers)
  • Bonus Provincial application portals

Admission Requirements

Due to the advanced nature of the material covered, registrants must have a basic knowledge of Canadian immigration law. This course was developed with the purpose of updating lawyers, paralegals, licensed immigration consultants, and immigration legal assistants in regard to the parameters of portal processing.

Live Online Students

Ashton College uses web conferencing tools for conducting online classes and online learning management systems for managing resources, assignments, and grades. These tools help instructors and students connect live online as well as asynchronously. The basic requirements for online learning include a computer, webcam, speakers, and a microphone or a headset and headphones, along with a reliable internet connection. Though online learning can be pursued using smartphones and tablets, the use of laptops or desktop computers is encouraged for an enhanced learning experience.
