Digital marketing is a progressive field where best practices are constantly evolving and changing. This means the career opportunities are unique and in high demand, allowing you to choose and create a career you love.  But what is digital marketing? Digital marketing combines the tools of marketing and technology with principles from business and design to utilize the online space to achieve business goals. Examples of digital marketing include: 

  • Websites 
  • Email marketing 
  • Social Media 
  • Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 

A digital marketing course will develop your marketing skills and show employers and clients that you have verified digital marketing skills, education, and experience.  Listed below are a few examples of career options after taking a digital marketing course. 

SEO Specialist 

An SEO Specialist tests, analyzes, and updates a website for SEO optimization. Having high SEO causes a website to rank high in search results and gets more hits. SEO Specialists are also in charge of managing Google ads and paid campaigns. Specific responsibilities can include: 

  • Closely collaborating with the web development team to ensure SEO best practices are properly followed throughout website content 
  • Working with editorial and marketing teams to drive SEO in content creation and content marketing 
  • Changing website architecture, content, linking and other factors to improve SEO positions for target keywords 
  • Performing ongoing keyword research, discovery and optimization for new SEO keywords to use throughout the company website and marketing materials 

To succeed as an SEO Specialist, you need to understand the three levels of SEO: technical, on-page SEO, and off-page optimization. Excellent communication and collaborative skills are a must as you will be working with a variety of people with different communication styles. You can increase your communication skills by taking an online communication course 

Marketing and Automation Specialist 

A Marketing and Automation Specialist handles the day-to-day duties of running automated marketing campaigns, fully leveraging the automation platform's capabilities. Depending on the size and needs of your company, you may work alone doing social media marketing and SEO optimization or work within a team and collaborate with other members of the marketing team. Specific responsibilities can include: 

  • Ensuring the marketing strategy fits the brand’s ethos 
  • Working with management to define KPIs, create reporting, analyze campaign performance. Create recommendations to improve campaigns continuously 
  • Planning and performing A/B testing to define and execute enhancements to productivity, conversion rates, programs/campaign ROI, and sales growth 
  • Managing marketing automation efforts and processes, proactively researching and implementing the latest best practices, strategies, and industry standards 

To succeed in the role of a Marketing and Automation Specialist, you need to understand the ins and outs of the automation platform you are using, be tech save, have project management and collaboration skills while being able to work solo and within a team.  

Digital Marketing Manager 

A Digital Marketing Manager can have different responsibilities, depending on the company you work in or how many people are on the communications and marketing team. Your role could entail overseeing social media marketing, inbound marketing, content marketing, email marketing, or just focusing on one. Anything in the online space that generates clients and promotes brand awareness is on you. Specific responsibilities can include: 

  • Creating an overall digital marketing strategy while staying on budget and maintaining brand identity 
  • Developing compelling content across all social media platforms leveraging best strategies for each platform 
  • Constantly researching and being up to date with new technology to optimize digital marketing efforts 
  • Creating highly detailed breakdowns of the nature of your traffic and the efficacy of your marketing campaigns   

You may also be the first point of contact with customers across digital platforms and need to manage those relationships effectively. There are many hard skills needed to succeed as a Digital Marketing Manager; you could potentially be overseeing everything and not have a content developer or SEO Specialist to help you out. So, knowledge and experience of SEO and SEM are crucial, as well as web analytics, writing skills, storytelling training, and design skills are all necessary to succeed as a Digital Marketing Manager.
