Intelligence in the World of Digital Design and Marketing

How do you define intelligence? Being smart is not about demonstrating your ability to memorize content, nor is it a direct reflection of your level of education. Intelligence can mean so many things and the application of intelligence will vary from person to person. You could be book smart or street smart, good with people or good with numbers. Intelligence can mean success in any number of areas. From logical insight to interpersonal effectiveness, read on to learn about the eight varied types of intelligence, what they mean for you, and how are each type can be applied to the world of digital design and marketing. 

Logical or Mathematical Intelligence 

  • Description: You excel at analysis, solving problems, mathematics or logistics. 
  • Application: Your sound logic will help you come up with creative solutions to complex design challenges for users and clients. Whenever your design team runs into a logistical roadblock, you will be the ideal person to brainstorm a constructive workaround. 

Linguistic Intelligence 

  • Description: You know that words are a powerful tool and you are an expert at descriptive language. You excel at communicating your ideas both verbally and in writing, providing understanding and clarity for others. 
  • Application: Your linguistic intelligence will give you a leg up when it comes to copyediting, communication, information architecture and hierarchy. You can present your ideas effectively, offering added clarity and simplicity for end-users or website visitors. 

Spatial Intelligence 

  • Explanation: Your visual eye is attuned to the world around you, making quick and accurate judgements about the spatial relationships between objects and visual concepts. You notice visual patterns and visual idiosyncrasies that other people would miss. 
  • Application: You can effortlessly communicate complex ideas through simple and attractive visuals. You are particularly skilled when it comes to design layout, visual communications, creative imagery and navigating white space. To build on your spatial intelligence and expand your skills, consider signing up for a UX design course online or a digital marketing certificate program with a strong design focus. 

Interpersonal Intelligence 

  • Description: You are adept at understanding others' thoughts and feelings with compassion and intuition. You can easily put yourself in others' shoes and broaden your own perspective. 
  • Application: User experiences are your domain. You can empathize with ease, which is the first of five core steps in the design thinking process. Your empathy and interpersonal skills also mean you are uniquely equipped to understand how user personas inspire effective UX design. 

Intrapersonal Intelligence 

  • Description: You possess a keen awareness of the self and you are naturally conscious and introspective. You are often aware of your own experiences, thoughts, feelings and unique perspective. 
  • Application: You can articulate your own experience, which is particularly useful for testing out prototypes and identifying opportunities for improvement. 

Musical Intelligence 

  • Description: You naturally understand rhythm and tone. Others may hear beautiful sounds, but you hear mathematics and design. 
  • Application: Your design future could include videography, podcasts and sound effects for video games or app development. You could easily source clever notification sounds to create impressive, impactful mobile or web applications. 

Naturalistic Intelligence 

  • Description: You are in tune with nature to the point that you excel at biology, agriculture or gardening. You may be drawn to outdoor sports and adventures such as camping, hiking or kayaking. 
  • Application: You may excel at nature photography, which could extend to product or food photography. You could also find rewarding work as a communications professional or freelance blog writing in the natural foods sector or health industry. 

Bodily or Kinesthetic Intelligence 

  • Description: You move with intention and are skilled in various sports or dance styles. You possess physical awareness, excellent motor skills and natural coordination. 
  • Application: Your fine motor skills make you an ideal candidate for product development and prototype building. With your expertise, your design team can take their product from idea to creation. 

Moving Beyond Intelligence and Cultivating Expertise 

Give yourself the best chance of success by building on your natural intelligence and cultivating expertise in marketing or design. Identify where you excel and create your portfolio based on those strengths. Gain foundational knowledge with the help of a UX design course or digital marketing course. Remember that everyone has different strengths and your intelligence may not look or feel the same as the person next to you. By applying yourself and prioritizing continuing education, you can learn everything you need to know about UX design and digital marketing.
